The chain locker rooms of the Michal Mine rank among the most authentic industrial heritage sites in Ostrava. It is here that MusEquality will present their programme “Folk Traces in Classical Music,” combining the cultivated virtuosity of classical music with the natural energy of folk tradition. What happens when the Baroque and Classical architecture of music is placed within a space shaped by the everyday lives of miners? And can the cimbalom or accordion hold their own in dialogue with Vivaldi, Haydn, Dvořák, Ravel, or Bartók?
MusEquality demonstrate that inspiration drawn from folklore was not a marginal element for composers, but one of the main sources of their creative work. From dramatic Baroque through Romantic lyricism to the rhythmic intensity of Central Europe, a musical arc emerges that is both refined and immediately communicative. In the industrial setting of the Michal Mine, this dialogue gains a new dimension: classical music meets the primal rhythms of the earth and hard labour — and folklore resonates once again as a living part of artistic memory.
