Filip Urban

Filip Urban, (born 1995) belongs to the youngest generation of Czech conductors. In 2024 he became a laureate of the Felix Mendelssohn International Conducting Competition and in 2023 he won the 1st Conducting Competition organized by the Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra. For 2025 he was selected as one of 24 conductors from around the world for the International Opera Conducting Competition CIDOO, organized by the Opèra Royal de Wallonie-Liège in Belgium. In January 2024 he was awarded the title of Talent of the Year of the City of Ostrava. He was also selected as a conductor for the Talentinum 2024 festival organized by the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic in Zlín and in 2021 as a conductor of the Ti nejlepší festival at the HAMU in Prague.

From the 2024/2025 concert season, Filip Urban became assistant to the chief conductor and guest conductors of the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava. Since 2018, he has been the chief conductor of the Brno Chamber Wind Orchestra and since 2023, the chief conductor of the Májóvák Karviná Symphonic Wind Orchestra. After graduating from the JAMU in Brno in the class of Prof. Jan Zbavitel, he is now continuing his doctoral study program at JAMU. In 2021/2022, he completed an internship abroad at the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber in Dresden. He has collaborated with ensembles such as the Czech Philharmonic, Odense Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonietta Dresden, Ensemble Courage, Moravian Philharmonic, Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic, Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra, North Bohemian Philharmonic, Moravian-Silesian Sinfonietta and has performed with soloists such as Josef Špaček, Lada Bočková, Peter Berger and others in his concerts as a conductor.

In 2023, he made his debut as a conductor at the Moravian Theatre Olomouc with the opera La clemenza di Tito by W. A. ​​Mozart. With this theatre, he also staged the opera The Bartered Bride by B. Smetana and La traviata by G. Verdi. In 2020, he also made his debut at the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre in Ostrava as a conductor of the gala evenings to open the season. During his studies at JAMU, he also worked as an assistant conductor at the National Theatre in Brno and had the opportunity, among other things, to collaborate with conductor Jakub Hrůša in the preparation of works From the House of the Dead / Glagolitic Mass by L. Janáček. He also collaborated with the opera of the Silesian Theatre in Opava, the Orlí Theatre in Brno, or with the Ensemble opera Diversa in Brno.

As a conductor, he often appears at the Ostrava Musical Present Festival. He also completed a conducting course at JAMU under the direction of conductors Marek Stringer and Tomáš Hanus. In September 2024, he was selected as the only Czech to participate in the prestigious Nordic Masterclass in Denmark under the direction of the famous conductor Jorma Panula. In 2018, he spent two months on an artistic internship at Ryan International School in Bengaluru, India. Since 2022, he has also been a teacher at the Brno Conservatory.
