Lotz Trio is a chamber ensemble named after the outstanding instrument maker Theodor Lotz (1746–1792), renowned for perfecting the basset horn in Pressburg (present-day Bratislava). Performing on faithful copies of his historical instruments, the ensemble regularly presents Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Terzetti, Juraj Družecký’s Divertissement pour Trois Cors de Bassett, as well as period arrangements from Mozart’s operas The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro, and Don Giovanni. Their repertoire also includes further works for three basset horns, such as the Terzette by the celebrated clarinet virtuoso Anton Stadler, divertimentos by Vojtěch Nudera, and trios by Antonín Volánek.
Lotz Trio has produced several premiere recordings. Its debut CD (Hudobný fond, 2008) features Johann Joseph Rösler’s Partita in C major alongside a unique collection of works by contemporary Slovak composers Martin Burlas, Marián Lejava, Daniel Matej, Boško Milakovič, and Marek Piaček. In 2009, the ensemble recorded Juraj Družecký’s complete collection Divertissement Pour Trois Cors de Basset for the Hevhetia label. The album Mozart Corni di Baßetti includes period arrangements from Mozart’s operas The Magic Flute and The Marriage of Figaro, as well as the Sei Notturni for three basset horns. In 2019, the ensemble made an exclusive live recording for Radio and Television of Slovakia entitled Mozart’s Magical Basset Horn.
Lotz Trio has appeared at leading concert venues including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Stockholm Early Music Festival, the Musikinstrumentenmuseum in Berlin, KoncertKirken in Copenhagen, the Sigurjón Ólafsson Museum in Reykjavík, Schloss Mirabell in Salzburg, and the St. Wenceslas Music Festival in the Czech Republic. In recent years, the ensemble has been actively promoting musical culture in Slovakia through its concert series Lotz Trio in Slovak Aristocratic Residences.
