Marian Friedl

He was born in 1979 and lives in his native Beskydy region, from where he goes to perform concerts all over the world. Music in many forms has accompanied him since childhood. He played the traditional music of his native region in dulcimer music, at parties he played the music of his grandfather’s youth with country musicians, and with his peers popular songs of his parents’ time and his own generation. He studied classical and jazz music at the conservatory, and focused on ethnomusicology at the university.

He is dedicated to reviving the playing of forgotten Beskyd instruments, music production, music creation, popularization of folk music and improvisation. He performs concerts on double bass, clarinet, folk flutes, bagpipes, kobze, small dulcimer and other instruments in genres ranging from classical music to folklore, world music and jazz.

His lifelong passion is the flute instruments of Wallachian shepherds, in which he found the forgotten sound of the Beskydy mountains. He gathered his experience in this field from the age of fifteen by visiting producers and players on the Czech-Slovak-Polish border, exploring museum and private collections, listening to recordings, studying literature, and creating his own instruments and music.

He uses his knowledge extensively in multifaceted musical projects drawing inspiration from the East Moravian musical tradition. His playing is recorded on many CDs by various performers (Tomáš Kočko, Dagmar Voňková, Jan Rokyta, Jiří Slavík, Peter Breiner etc.) as well as his own albums such as Songs of Hukvaldské Beskydy (2014), Beránci a vlci (2016), Beskydská Odysea ( 2019), Song of the EARTH (2019), 11 SHAPES OF LOVE (2020).

Currently, he is a permanent member of the Beskydy band RukyNaDudy, Plaisirs de Musique, NOCZ Quartet, 11 PODOB LÁSKY, Misterios del Amore projects.

He is the author of two musical fairy tales About Bačovi, who played a false trumpet and About the bagpiper, who wanted to learn a proper trade, co-author of the series of interactive fairy tales Kingdom of Music (together with Martin Galia), author and director of the film Lambs and Wolves and clips for the songs Hopsa, chlaplaci and Our love. Together with Jiřina Gondová, he published the interactive textbook Hrajme na bezříková píště endovka (Libreta 2021). He teaches at the ZUŠ Frenštát pod Radhoštěm and the Department of Musicology of the Palacký University in Olomouc. He teaches privately, leads workshops focused on teaching the endgame and other folk instruments or improvisation.

In 2017, he received the Anděl music award for the album Beránci a vlci, in 2015 he recorded the album Mateřština with Jiří Slavík, for which he won the Anděl award in 2016. For the album Divé husy, he was nominated for the Anděl award in 2018 together with Trio of Jitka Šuranská, in 2020 and 2021 he received nominations for the M-S region’s Jantar award for the album Beskydská Odyssey and 11 SHAPES OF LOVE.
